I heard or read somewhere that the new ticket machines for the Myki ticketing system were bullet proof.  Obviously they’re not idiot proof however.

This is the second time I’ve seen this happen to the machine on the city bound side of Brunswick station.  I don’t even go to the station that often, so it could have happened more often than twice.
As far as I’m concerned this adds more weight to the manning of stations argument (or is it peopling in this ridiculous PC world!?).
That and the fact that the front of the station has become a urinal, with a constant stream of piss travelling over the path, it’s disgusting.  I see, and smell, that often, as I whizz past on my bike.  Gross.

  1. It must just be cheaper to repair and clean up and install passive security than have staff on a station. I was impressed in Sydney where there still seem to be plenty of platform staff.

  2. Didn't you miss the memo where all of Melbourne is now one gigantic urinal? I had about 15 guys filling the laneway next to my house with piss this evening, in broad daylight next to a busy road, but that's not the point. The point is staff at stations and even some at busy tram stops would be a godsend. Don't count on it any time soon. I don't think they could possibly pay enough danger money for anyone in their right mind to take the job.

  3. Andrew, I guess we'll never know, as Kez says, we can't count on stations being re-staffed anytime soon :(Kez I read your facebook updates and laughed. Oh to be a boy and to be able to pee anywhere and anytime. Jealous.
